Canadian Sets World Record At Boston Marathon

April 16 was a very hot day in Boston, Mass. It was a record-setting 27 degrees Celsius.

It was the day of the 116th Boston Marathon.

A marathon is a long-distance race, covering just over 42 kilometres. On this day, many runners (16 per cent of them, in fact) decided to pass on the event because it was too hot. Many other racers posted slower than usual race times.

Except for one participant. Canadian Josh Cassidy, 27, set a world record.

Cassidy won the men’s wheelchair division. He raced in a three-wheel, high-tech wheelchair; he uses his arms to power it.

Cassidy finished with a record time of 1:18:25 (one hour, 18 minutes and 25 seconds). His time was two seconds faster than the previous best time, set by South Africa’s Ernst Van Dyk in 2004.

Every team is hoping to make it to the World Series in October.

It’s happened before—in 1992 and 1993 when the Jays won the World Series. You never know!

Physically Challenged Bills Fan Protests Blackout Rule

Ralph Wilson Stadium – the home field for the Buffalo Bills football team – seats more than 70,000 people.

This is a rule put in place by the National Football League (NFL). It’s called a “blackout rule.” TV games are “blacked out” – not shown – if the stadium is not full.

Can Tiger Woods Win This Year’s Masters?

The unofficial start of the golfing season begins on Thursday in Augusta, Georgia, with one of the most prestigious events in golf, the Masters Tournament.

The Masters golf tournament goes all the way back to 1934.

However, it is a recent win by Tiger Woods—perhaps the greatest player in the history of golf—that has everyone talking. They want to know: will Woods win his fifth Masters?

Even though he is a great player, if Woods wins the Masters this year it will be a big surprise.

That’s because until last month, Woods hadn’t won a tournament in nearly three years. It was the longest drought of his career.

About three years ago, Tiger Woods’s career—and his personal life—had a melt-down. He had a very public divorce with many problems. He also had issues with his golf form (in other words, the way he swung the club) as well as injuries.

He stopped winning. And many people wrote him off entirely.

Rockies Pitcher Jamie Moyer Not Letting Age Deter Him

Major League Baseball (MLB) begins on April 4.

Until then, the baseball players are in spring training to fine-tune their skills.

The teams, fans and players are hoping to have a great year—and none more so than 49-year-old pitching hopeful, Jamie Moyer.

If Moyer wins a game this season, he’ll be the oldest pitcher in MLB history to win a regular season game according to the Elias Sports Bureau, an organization that keeps track of baseball statistics.

Toronto Maple Leafs Get A New Coach

It’s not every day you have to fire an old college roommate, but this week Brian Burke, General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey team, did just that.

After a six game losing streak, Burke made a tough decision.

To remove Leafs coach Ron Wilson, a friend of Burke’s for nearly 40 years, and replace him with Randy Carlyle.

Burke has also known and worked with Carlyle before.

In fact, Burke and Carlyle won a Stanley Cup together in 2007 when they both worked for the Anaheim Ducks hockey team.

(The Stanley Cup is hockey’s championship trophy.)

Who is Jeremy Lin?

On Feb. 4, The New York Knicks basketball team played the New Jersey Nets at Madison Square Gardens in New York City.

The Nets played hard, but they simply couldn’t beat this Knicks team. There was something special about them… and that was Jeremy Lin.

Jeremy Lin turned heads during that game by scoring 25 points and adding seven assists.

Good numbers for any player, but especially for an undrafted player with only a handful of games under his belt.

But this where the story really gets good.
