There have been many stories of courage and compassion towards the city and the people who come from there.
On May 1, a wildfire started in a forest near the Alberta town of Fort McMurray. Within two days, the fire grew larger and the people who lived in Fort McMurray had to leave their homes.

Philippines Hit By Massive Typhoon
There has been a terrible storm in the Philippines.
The Philippines is a country in southeast Asia.
Because it is an island in the Pacific Ocean, the Philippines often gets very bad weather, including earthquakes, volcanoes and typhoons.
However, Typhoon Haiyan is perhaps the worst natural disaster to ever befall the country.
The typhoon hit the Philippines last Friday.
Its winds of up to 300 kilometres an hour whipped up the ocean waves.
The storm also caused flooding and landslides.
The country’s National Red Cross has launched a huge program to help the people whose houses were destroyed by the typhoon.
Canadian Teens Will Stand Up Against Bullying
Teens across Canada will soon be helping their peers to shut down bullying.
The Canadian government announced it will spend a quarter of a million dollars on a new anti-bullying project called Stand Up to Bullying and Discrimination in Canadian Communities.
The Canadian Red Cross will organize the project, which will involve more than 50,000 Canadian youths.
The first step will be for 2,400 “facilitators,” aged 13 to 17, to put on anti-bullying workshops. The goal is for least 20 young people to be in the audience at each workshop.
The project’s second phase includes three gatherings, led by young people, in Ontario, British Columbia and the Atlantic region. During each gathering, 150 Canadian kids will be empowered to “take action against bullying and discrimination in their communities,” according to a media release from the Canadian Red Cross.
“The Red Cross has been working for many years in Canada to engage youth and harness their leadership to prevent bullying and harassment,” said Conrad Sauvé, Secretary General and CEO of the Canadian Red Cross,” according to the media release.
Attawapiskat: Canada’s “Fourth-World” Community
Nearly a month ago, the northern Canadian First Nations community Attawapiskat declared itself to be in a “state of emergency.”
This week, as winter sets in and snow is on the ground in the remote community, they are finally getting some attention–and some help.
In Canada, a state of emergency is normally declared when something terrible happens to a place, such as an earthquake, flood or large fire.
It’s a signal to the country’s government that “we need help, immediately.”
In this case, the state of emergency is that the people of Attawapiskat, in northern Ontario are living in conditions that are worse than those in many third-world countries.
One reporter described going to Attawapiskat as, “like stepping into the fourth world.”
